New characteristics for the assessment of malnutrition in adult patients, including energy intake, weight loss, subcutaneous fat and muscle mass loss, fluid accumulation, and grip strength are applicable to intensive care unit patients. Malnutrition in these patients, including critically ill obese patients, is associated with increased mortality.
