Summary

Ongoing research of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation has identified new mediators of thrombosis and thus novel targets to prevent thrombosis. The risk of bleeding is low or absent with treatments targeting the intrinsic pathway. This approach will likely reduce or eliminate thrombosis that is induced by implanted medical devices.
