Obese individuals who have the ability to recruit new adipocytes develop adipocyte hyperplasia, whereas others have adipocyte hypertrophy due to impaired adipogenesis. The ability to recruit new adipocytes protects against ectopic fat accumulation in the abdomen, skeletal muscle, and liver.
