Left Atrial Appendage Closure and Stroke Prevention

Summary

Mechanical closure of the left atrial appendage reduces the stroke event rate in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and appears to be an alternative to medical therapy with an oral anticoagulant. The Lariat and Watchman devices are among the current options, and next-generation devices are being developed to address design issues to further improve clinical outcomes and safety.
