Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse changes in Estonia's cultural magazine Vikerkaar (Rainbow) in 1986-1992. Estonian society went through remarkable changes during this period: from Soviet state to renewed independence. The concept of 'autonomy' holds a key role in my research. I study Vikerkaar in relation to two important heteronomic forces: state power and the pressure of the market. During the first years Vikerkaar had to struggle with the Soviet censorship but managed to preserve its autonomy to a large extent. In 1989 the Soviet regime had lost its strength and the state as a heteronomic force no longer played a significant role. In independent Estonia the state supported Vikerkaar financially and the magazine could maintain its autonomy in the market economy.
