Abstract

Abood v. Detroit Board of Education, decided by the U. S. Supreme Court May 23, 1977 held that states could properly allow agency shop provisions in public sector unionism subject to the same restriction previously delineated for private sector unions in International Association of Machinists v. Street. This paper is a synopsis on the opinions of the Supreme Court Justices in Abood, and an analysis of some of the problems unions will face in implementing the agency shop as allowed by the court in the case.
