Bedside Cardiology was first published in 1969, with the third edition appearing in 1985. According to the author, the fourth edition, like the first three, is, "... designed for those who wish to balance the advances in technology by increasing their skills in diagnosing cardiovascular disorders through history-taking and physical examination." That goal is attained. A clear strength of this text is the comprehensive treatment of taking medical histories and the general cardiovascular physical examination described in the first five chapters. The description and explanation of physical findings is thorough, well organized, and very readable.

The chapter dealing with cardiac clues from the physical appearance is particularly valuable. At a time in the evolution of health system reform when there is more accountability and justification required for the use of technology, it is timely and refreshing to have a thorough review of the basic skills of talking to the patient and . . .
