It is widely acknowledged that AIDS [acquired immunodeficiency syndrome] must increasingly become a disease managed by primary care practitioners... the special skills of primary care physicians are often valuable... with a disease that can affect every organ system... with a vast array of psychosocial issues, and that increasingly may be controlled through early intervention and long-term continuity of care.

Thus begins the introduction in this well-organized set of 14 articles adapted from the AIDS Clinical Care monthly newsletter published by the Massachusetts Medical Society.

The articles cover workups, assessments, and background information. The topics range from early histories and physical examinations through routine therapies and early workups, and end with a chapter on preparing for disability and, finally, death. The strength of this series of articles is its succinct, primary care-oriented approach. Although one can at times feel that more information about a specific topic is needed than is found . . .
